Keep It Simple Stupid

For a phrase often used ironically, it sure holds a lot of weight.

Keeping it simple is a skill. No different than shooting a ball, or jumping over a bar, or doing a kickflip.

As easy as it sounds, most don't have the balls to keep it simple. Keeping it simple takes something that people often lack in this day and age.

...Faith...

People lack faith, vision, and a will to mold and shape the future as if it were yours. People lack the ability to dig into the past, and quickly peer into the future and see what truly matters.

But that's all keeping it simple is... It's time travel. The ability to look through time and see what it is that truly makes a difference. Once we figure out what that thing is, we keep doing it until we find the next thing.

That's keeping it simple in a nutshell.

Often time in exercise, life, and sports the answer truly is keeping it simple. Too often it's our own complex human brains complicating simple things for us. We need clarity and confidence. We need to know, feel, and trust that we are on the correct path. We don't need to second guess what we are doing because we know it works.

I implement this into my training by having a few staple exercises that I always have in the program no matter what. An example of this is I always have a squat movement, a hinge movement, a supine press, and a heavy pull in my programs. These are spread out with some other exercises over 3-6 days depending on the program. No matter if I make a 2-day program or a 6-day program, it is always going to have those movements I just mentioned above, the reason is they are simple and they work. I am now advanced enough where I have lots of other stuff to work on, but that's only due to the fact that I mastered my basics.

Steph Curry still form shoots, Noah Lyles still practices his block starts, and Scottie Sheffler still practices his drives off the tee. If you aren't willing to work on the simple knowing that you can handle the advanced, then you can't expect to progress as fast as you could've. In life, on the field, and in the classroom, just work on mastering the basics - the rest will come later. Just remember...

Keep It Simple Stupid
